Chivas USA Pierde Ante Rapids de Colorado
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (Saturday, May 25, 2013) – Chivas USA (3-7-2) fell 2-0 Saturday night at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park to the Colorado Rapids (5-4-4) in their second meeting of the season. With a goal in each half, the home side was led by scores from Atiba Harris and Nathan Strurgis, respectively. With the loss, the Red-and-White could not move from their 11-point total in the Western Conference.
The Rapids went up a goal in the 11th minute on Harris’ second score of the season when he got on the end of Chris Klute’s cross from outside the left side of the box. Harris made his cut down the middle of the box and placed the ball toward the lower right corner of the net with his sliding shot.
The Rojiblancos pushed their numbers forward in search of the equalizer and nearly found it as a result of one of their four corner kicks taken in the half. Midfielder Carlos Alvarez – who was making his first appearance for the Goats since serving a two-game suspension – served his pass into the box and defender Bobby Burling got a clean header on the entry, but the shot bounced wide left of the post and out of bounds.
In the 69th minute, midfielder Eric Avila made a solo play from his right wing spot and created space for himself and got off a clean strike, but Colorado goalkeeper Clinton Irwin was there for the save.
The Red-and-White continued to get into spaces in their attacking third and in the 76th minute, Alvarez played a through ball to Jose Manuel Rivera – who came on as a sub in the 68th minute for forward Jose Correa – as he made his run and got behind the Colorado defense for a split second inside the box. Rivera’s shot, though, sailed wide right and the match remained locked at 1-0.
Two minutes later, the hosts extended their lead to 2-0 when Brown gathered a threaded pass from Brian Mullan and sent a cross from inside the right of the box near the end line to a cutting Strugis for his one-time goal on top of the six-yard line. The Rojiblancos continued to push forward to generate promising looks on both wings but could not capitalize on the opportunities as the marker stood.
Chivas USA return home next Saturday when they host Seattle Sounders FC in the clubs’ first of three meetings this season. The match is set to kickoff at 7:30 p.m. (PT) and can be heard in Spanish on W Radio 690.
