GENARO “CHICANITO” HERNANDEZ
A CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE RING
Genaro “Chicanito” Hernandez is a fighter who conquered the glory of becoming a world champion and also has conquered the admiration of many for his exemplary behavior outside the ring.
On March 22, 1997, Genaro “Chicanito” Hernandez was defeating the legendary Azumah Nelson, who was the WBC champion of the world.
At the end of the 9th round Azumah Nelson accidentally throw a huge punch after the belt in the throat of “Chicanito” who went down and had to be assisted by the doctors. Genaro would have stayed down and would have won the title by disqualification, but instead he told his corner men “to be a champion, you must beat the champion. I will continue fighting”. Genaro “Chicanito” Hernandez become the WBC superfeatherweight champion of the world by unanimous decision that night.
Genaro eventually lost the title to one of the greatest fighters Floyd Mayweather and retired from boxing.
Ever since his retirement Genaro has represented the world of boxing in an exemplary manner and has brought many smiles to children faces all over the world.
Genaro participated in the first ever WBC Cares visit back in 2006 when this program begun and he visited the children hospital with Erik Morales.
Genaro is battling a tough fight with cancer, he has the heart of a lion and he will overcome this decease as he did it before.
