CHIVAS USA’S YOUTH TEAMS MAKE GREAT IMPRESSION AT THE GENERATION CUP: The 2011 Generation Adidas Cup took place last week July 25 through July 31st at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas. It consisted of two tournaments for youth teams of MLS clubs. The U17 tournament included teams from 16 MLS clubs, while the U15 tournament included teams from 8 MLS clubs. Throughout tournament play both Chivas USA’s youth teams in the U17 and U15 categories made a stellar run at the cup, and once again showcased their play and performance. From the beginning of tournament play and through the final the U15’s were determined to take the cup falling just short of that effort with a 2-3 loss in the championship match against the squad from the New York Red Bulls in Frisco, TX, this past weekend. After taking an early lead in the first half Edgar Gonzalez scored a dipping volley assisted by GK Bryan Gomez. In the second half Hugo Gutierrez scored the equalizer, unfortunately the Red Bulls would break their hearts by scoring the winning goal just two minutes before the final whistle. In the meantime the U17 overcame their devastating defeat in the semis vs. the LA Galaxy team by beating rival DC United 6-0 in the third place match. The Goats star of the tournament Kevin de la Torre once again showcased his prowess and added an additional 4 goals to bring his total to 9 goals in 5 games and earned him the coveted Golden Boot trophy for the 2011 Cup. Pedro Velasquez and Mario Ortiz added the other 2 goals as Christian Carrillo assisted on 4 of the 6 goals.
CHIVAS USA FALL SHORT AT PIZZA HUT PARK: In Frisco, Texas and under 103 degree weather, the Goats faced and lost 1-0 against the Western Conference sub leader FC Dallas as they started their five game road trip at Pizza Hut Park Sunday evening before 10,023 fans. FC Dallas took the lead in the match through Marvin Chavez, who scored his 4th goal of the season at the 26th minute, assisted by forward Ruben Luna. Chavez struck the ball and Chivas USA defender Heath Pearce, in an attempt to block the shot, deflected the direction of it and the ball ended up in the back of Kennedy’s net. Chivas USA had several opportunities to score but could not capitalize. Early on, Nick LaBrocca crossed from the left side of the box to forward Justin Braun but the effort from the Chivas USA goal leader was not enough to reach the ball and score. Later on, in less than 90 seconds, FC Dallas approached twice on the visiting team’s box and created two real goal opportunities but Red-and-White goalkeeper Dan Kennedy did a great job and saved his team once again.
PEARCE AND LABROCCA – ALL STAR GAME: For Nick LaBrocca it was a homecoming growing up just a few miles from the Red Bull Arena; for Heath Pierce, it was his second consecutive trip to the All Star festivities.
